This quick start guide explains the installation process in detail.
The Opsview VMWare Virtual Machine is intended to provide a demonstration package for easily evaluating Opsview. Licensed, it can be used in a production environment. The image can be obtained from the Opsview download site.
The VM uses the VMDK format and is configured for VMware Player and VirtualBox. It may be necessary to use VMware Converter if you're planning to run this VM on VMware ESX Server.

The virtual machine comes configured to use DHCP in order to obtain an address on the network. If the VM is having compatibility issues running alongside another Opsview VM, for example if both VMs have been assigned the same IP, it may be necessary to reinitialise the MAC address of one of them. In some situations, using DHCP may not be desirable. A simple method for changing the IP address of the virtual machine has been provided.
You will need to get to the login prompt on the virtual machine - in vmware player this should be shown automatically when the VM is started. With VMware Server it may be necessary to connect to the VMware console, then to select the Opsview VM from the inventory. In either case you should be presented with a login prompt when the VM has booted.
To set a static IP address, first log in at the prompt with the following credentials:
- Username: conf
- Password: conf

Run the command 'netconf' and you will be prompted for the network settings you wish to use for the virtual machine. Note that if you answer 'Yes' when asked if you'd like to use the new settings, this will take effect immediately.

The configuration changes will now be applied. You should then see the message:
Network setup complete.
and you should be able to connect to the Opsview server on the IP address specified above. In this example it would be https://192.168.0.100/
Once you are able to reach the web interface on port 80 of the VM (see above section on Initial Configuration), you should be presented with a login prompt.
There is currently one administrator account configured, with a default username and password of 'admin' and 'initial'.
To simplify the management of the server, we bundle Webmin with the virtual appliance. It can be accessed on port 10000, for example https://192.168.0.100:10000/, using the conf credentials detailed above. The first time your browser connects to it, you will be prompted to accept an SSL certificate. It is not automatic because it is self-signed. It is OK to permanently accept it.
If you want command line root access you can get it via the conf user. Just type:
sudo su -
The password for conf user is specified in Initial Configuration section of this document.
Note: Support isn't available if you've made changes as root user and your VM stops working.
NTP can be used to syncronise the time of your VM with a time server. To install the NTP daemon, run the following command from the root console:
apt-get install ntp
If the latest version of the daemon is already installed you will see a message saying “ntp is already the newest version”
Edit /etc/ntp.conf to configure a suitable NTP server. Preferably use the NTP server on your LAN otherwise there are NTP servers available for public use on the internet.
Opsview consists of various GPL software components which are provided by 3rd parties. This includes Nagios® Core and the Nagios Plugins.
